The Council on Foundations Honors William S. White
William S. White with Council President and CEO Vikki Spruill after accepting his honor.
As part of the 2014 Fall Conference for Community Foundations, The Council on Foundations honored William S. White, Chairman, President, and CEO of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, for his work to support community philanthropy and promote partnerships across foundation types. White was presented with an award acknowledging his enduring commitment to the field during a reception at the Cleveland Museum of Art. The Mott Foundation has for years supported the growth and development of community foundations, both in the United States and globally. The Mott Foundation has also been instrumental in helping the field commemorate the hundredth anniversary of The Cleveland Foundation, the world's first community foundation.
As he wished the field a happy birthday, White noted that "the really exciting work of philanthropy today is happening in local communities." Since The Cleveland Foundation was founded in 1914, more than 1,800 communities around the world have founded community foundations. In recent years, there has been tremendous growth outside of the United States, due in no small part to White's tireless leadership and the generous support of the Mott Foundation.
