L.A. Rolls Out Red Carpet for Nation’s Grantmakers
Council on Foundations Annual Conference examines gaming, crisis and celebrity
Over 1,000 of the nation's top grantmakers will gather in Los Angeles for the Council on Foundations Annual Conference, April 29–May 1. The conference will serve as a hub of conversation on the top issues and opportunities facing philanthropy today, including an opening session held in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of the L.A. civil unrest on April 29, focused on how crisis can become a community's turning point.
The conference's Los Angeles location ensures there will be a significant celebrity presence. For example, "The Power of Celebrity and Philanthropy" plenary session will feature presentations fromGeena Davis, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Mandy Moore. There will also be a dramatic performance by actress Anna Deavere Smith focused on racial division, healing, and—ultimately—the human condition, and a discussion on America's "vanishing" middle class" with Kai Ryssdal, the host and senior editor of Marketplace. In addition, the conference marks the release of Increasing Impact, Enhancing Value: A Practitioner's Guide to Leading Corporate Philanthropy, an invaluable report based on original field research that will change corporate giving.
Off-site sessions will showcase the important work the philanthropic sector is doing in the City of Angels, including a presentation on art collaboration among cultural organizations at the Getty Center, a walking tour to learn more about historic building preservation in Downtown L.A., a discussion on current improvement projects along the Los Angeles River, a candid look at philanthropy and its impact on Skid Row, and an exploratory workshop and discussion on the efforts of the city’s Gang Reduction and Youth Development Program.
